Whole New Holes

THE TWO COURSES AT TROON NORTH GOLF CLUB HAVE BEEN AWARDED 20 YEARS OF ACCOLADES. SO WHY CHANGE THEM NOW?

Story by Jason Kerkmans

What started in 1990 with the unveiling of the Tom Weiskopf- and Jay Morrish-designed Monument course at Troon North Golf Club and the subsequent development of the Weiskopf-designed Pinnacle course six years later has undergone a major transformation. Now, for those golfers who frequent Troon North, the two benchmarks of desert golf design may no longer look familiar…at least, not entirely."The course reconfiguration is something we contemplated in 1996 when we built the [Pinnacle] course," Weiskopf says of the swapping of holes between the Pinnacle and Monument courses. For the reconfiguration, Weiskopf took the two former front nines from both of the old routings and combined them to form the "new" Monument course. The back nines from the prior routings were merged to create the "new" Pinnacle course. In addition, for the new Pinnacle course, a few of the holes were further reordered to make the course more friendly to golfers who choose to walk during their round.
