In retrospect, it was a high compliment these clients paid Magee, liking and believing enough in his limited portfolio of examples to entrust their Desert Mountain lot to him. But at the time, it presented a “sobering” challenge to Magee. “I’m used to being a little more emotional in my decisions about things,” Magee explains. “I don’t agonize and give it the corporate committee approach.”
These are strong words from a retired businessman, but his background is precisely what lends them weight. Corporate success, after all, often imposes a stiff penalty of creative suppression. “It’s really a knee-jerk reaction to having many years where I chafed at the bit of having to put up with that,” Magee says of his transformation from businessman to homebuilder. “I wanted to be involved with something where you could be more spontaneous.”
