As legend has it, a single woman who sleeps with a slice of groom’s cake under her pillow will supposedly dream of her Prince Charming. Though we’re not willing to ruin our silk shams to prove this theory, some Valley cake makers think a groom’s cake can be a nice touch to a wedding reception or rehearsal dinner. Barbara Gardner, owner of Phoenix-based Let Them Eat Cake, believes the matrimonial man deserves a little something just for him. “The wedding day is all about the bride,” she says. Gardner’s groom’s cakes have taken the shape of everything from golf balls to football helmets and have even acted as a miniature version of the wedding cake—only with a converse color scheme.
Andrea Carusetta-Blaut, cake artist and founder of Sedona Cake Couture (Carusetta-Blaut frequently does cakes for Valley customers and was featured on the Food Network’s “Mystery Cake Challenge” in the spring), has done only a limited number of groom’s cakes—but that will surely change. “I decided to do groom’s cakes that were more aesthetic,” she says. Skilled in sugar art, Carusetta-Blaut hopes to create simple cakes topped with a small sugar showpiece. Carusetta-Blaut even appeased a Mac-loving groom by topping his cake with a simple, tasteful apple shape (as in the computer company’s logo).
